My Review

A Fall of Silver is beautifully written. It combines mystery, suspense, a little romance and gritty urban fantasy - all in lyrical prose. It is the second in Ms. Corwin's The Redemption Series. I can't say for certain, since I didn't read the first, but with the possible exception of some world building, A Fall of Silver is readable as a standalone. It's certainly worth reading.

A Fall of Silver tells of two people, Allison "Quicksilver" Bankes and Kethan Hilliard, both in search of redemption. They meet quite by accident. Despite having opposing philosophies on the best solution to the local vampire problem, the two join forces. The reasons behind their philosophies are part of the mystery of the story and it's one of the reasons I kept turning the pages. :)

There's also the suspense of how the vampire situation will be dealt with. Action was achieved through Quicksilver's talent with her unique silver whips. She was certainly a force to reckon with as well as a valid fear for the vampires. And, of course, there's the blossoming romance between Quicksilver and Kethan, both of whom believe themselves incapable of loving and of being loved.

However, the main reason I was glued to the pages of this book is the writing. Although, I felt at times the story moved a little slowly, the prose is stunning.

"Anger. She tried to control it, but it festered inside her, poisoning everything she touched."
"She shifted from one foot to the other, feeling old and scarred, an ugly duckling frantically swimming to keep up with a pair of swans."
"At least the sun was shining, although the trees were barren and the ground was carpeted with the dead, brown ghosts of leaves."

I love a story told with lovely language and A Fall of Silver is certainly that. I delighted in watching Quicksilver's transformation through Ms. Corwin's prose. Every detail of the story is so lovingly laid out, you can feel what these characters mean to the author. And that makes reading a joy.

So despite my feeling the story plodded along in places, I very much enjoyed A Fall of Silver.
